Feed Your Pet What It Needs

Dog owners go to a lot of trouble in order to make sure that their dogs are as happy and healthy as possible.  Not only do they take care of their medical needs and make sure that they get plenty of exercise but they also are very interested in their dogs nutrition.  Most people, however, don't really take the time that is necessary to investigate what they're dogs need as far as food.  They just simply go with whatever they can pick up at the market, sometimes paying attention to what is on the dog food commercials more than anything and just trusting that the dog food company is going to care as much about their pet as they do.  Let me assure you that nothing could really be farther from the truth.

Dog food companies are not regulated by the same agencies that regulate what goes into food for human consumption.  Many times they are allowed to put things in the product that makes up the food that you would never feed to your dog.  That is why it is imperative that you not only know the dog food company that you are using but that you trust them implicitly. 

One of the main things that you should look for when choosing a food product for your dog is the list of ingredients.  Many times the main ingredient that goes into dog food will be corn.  Dogs are perfectly capable of living off of a vegetarian diet, but corn is not easy to digest and should not be the main ingredient that is fed to your pet.  Your dog would be much better off having a lamb based diet, or some other type of meat.  If you do want to feed your dog a vegetarian diet then make sure that the food that you choose is organic. 

Another factor that you need to keep in mind is that different dogs have different nutritional requirements.  Just as people need to take in different nutrition according to their age, size, and physical activity dogs also need the same consideration.  If your dog is very active, and has lots of room to run then you will need to give it a higher calorie food or feed it more frequently.  If your dog just lays around the house all day while you are working than you will want to make sure that you do not feed it as many calories so it does not have a problem with its weight.  You also need to decide whether you're going to feed your dog dry food or wet food.  This is more of a personal preference but you should also consider your dog's age and ability to chew dry food. 

Your dog is counting on you to take the best care of it as you possibly can.  Dogs give us so much love and the only thing that they really require back from us is to make sure that they are well taken care of.  That is where you come in.  Make sure that your dog is well fed, not only so that it is full, but so that it is healthy and is around for many years.
